PEN DRAWINGS

START WITH THESE PEN EXERCISES

A LITE SUMMATIVE ASSIGNMENT (.25)
For this first drawing you will be drawing a person or a place. You have two options to display the visual information

WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR
  • technique (hatching, cross hatching, scumbling, etc)
  • depth through a wide range values
  • the ability to distinguish who or where it is
  • composition
  • DONE IN PEN!
OPTION 1:
  • You will make an overlapping composition of a minimum of 5 geometric shapes (circles, triangles, squares, etc.)
  • In each shape you will highlight different distinguishing features of that person or place. Is there things that are unique to that place or make it stand out?
  • This option can sometimes be a little easier due to the fact placement and proportions of the features can vary without throwing everything off.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS
- start light and add layers for depth
- sketch out contours in a H pencil first
- use a stencil on your source image define what will be in each shape
- use a variety of shape sizes

FOUND OBJECT  // SUMMATIVE

OPTION 1 - ART ON FOUND OBJECTS
For this option you will be challenged to draw on a found object. The object and the drawing should have some connection between the two.
Connections can come in a variety of forms as you can see below.
  • Consider physical relationships like the image below where the red printed document  transforms into a crown or the how matches are meant to represent the iconic broken door from movie the Shining.
  • Connections through memory could be that the item reminds you of a time, place or person.
  • Found Connection - You could draw the place where you found the object, maybe the person you were with or possibly where the item may have come from originally.

OPTION TWO - FOUND OBJECTS INTO ART
For this option you will be challenged to draw a compelling composition and or narrative of the found object(s). With this version of the project we can turn to inspiration from Vancouver artist Janice Wu.  As you can see in the examples below Janice tells stories through the objects she finds in the streets as well as the seemingly random objects she finds in her pockets at the end of the day. These objects tell us a story about her adventures and interactions.

For your drawing of the found object(s) consider the following ideas;
  • create a series of similar objects like the chopstick wrappers or burnt matches
  • pick up random items throughout the day to document your adventures
  • draw something that has been destroyed and create a composition with the individual parts like the sugar packets

Vancouver artist Janice Wu's work is characterized by an astounding level of detail. Her work often meditates on the things most people don't look twice at—folded paper wrappers stuffed into pockets, receipts and bus tickets tossed onto the desk on your way out the door. Wu uses primarily pencil and gouache (and lots and lots of careful time spent) to create her contemporary still lifes, directing the viewers attention to things they take for granted, or, further, the things the viewer considers worthless. Take a gander through Wu's work and see in action the artist as anthropologist.
