My Miniature World

Felix Hernandez, a Mexican photographer who currently lives in Cancun which has left the world delighted with his witty photographs featuring different miniatures them seem straight out of a dream. Felix has up his sleeve a good number of tricks where he plays with scale, perspective, approach and composition of all his scenes in addition to using several "special effects" that achieved with the help of smoke, dry ice, sand or flour to achieve incredible scenes which end to grip shape with a little Photoshop.  http://www.hernandezdreamphography.com/

RULES AND EXPECTATIONS FOR GOING OUTSIDE:
The ability to go outside as a class to take photos is a privilege not a right. Please follow the few simple rules and we are all good. If not you are not only hurting yourself but you are wrecking it for everyone else in class.
  1. We go outside as a class and we come back inside as a class
  2. Crimson Way! - We are out in the public which means you are representing your school and your generation
  3. 100 yard bubble - do not wonder off more than 100 yards
  4. WWND (what would Nelson do?)- Think about it, if you even think i might get mad at you don't bother to do it in the first place. Use your best judgement. Do you want wet shoes for the rest of the day? What would happen if you fall? Etc.
  5. Be aware of time and be ready to go when it is time to come back inside.
  6. Leave no trace (LNT) - Animals live out there and people go out there for a beautiful environment so don't leave your trash and don't leave a impact.
  7. Leave other classes alone they are trying to get stuff done and so should you.

Assignment:

Your are being challenged to take a miniature toy figure out of it's toy context and place it into  a realistic(ish) setting. You will be required to demonstrate a understanding of depth of field using the DSLR Cameras.

You will be submitting 4 photo:
  • 1 with the foreground in focus
  • 1 with the middle ground in focus
  • 1 with the background in focus
  • 1with everything in focus.

You will be learning to adjust the aperture and adjusting the focus to effectively and efficiently create a narrative telling your viewer the order of importance.

BE CREATIVE & USE INTENTION!!!
What is  your intention with these photographs? What story are you telling? What clues are you giving to your viewer to lead them to your story?

Don't forget about composition basics!!!

Rubric:
  • Submission - 4 images with different focus ranges (foreground, middle ground, background all), each photo has a different setup (not just adjusting focus with same set up)  - 50%
  • Creativity - student was creative in the subject photographed and composition - 20%
  • Lighting - Use lighting to your advantage, highlights, shadows, etc. - %10
  • Color Correction - colors have been adjusted through using the color correction process we covered in class - %10

Enhance your story telling through depth of field.

Picture
Although this photo does tell a story and works with rule of thirds it doesn't show depth of field.

VS

Picture
Here we get a better sense of how the driver feels in the heat of the chase by focusing in on him (middle ground) While the hood of the car (foreground) and the police car  (background) remain blurry creating a narrow depth of field.
