KNOWING THE FOUNDATIONS,
BEING ABLE TO STUDY OTHERS, AND
THEN BREAKING THE RULES!!

EVERYONE MUST WATCH THIS VIDEO FIRST

KNOWING THE FOUNDATIONS, BEING ABLE TO STUDY OTHERS, AND THEN BREAKING THE RULES!!

In my humble opinion,KNOWING THE FOUNDATIONS, BEING ABLE TO STUDY OTHERS, AND THEN BREAKING THE RULES is the biggest takeaway from this video. Everyone wants to be able to just, magically be good (or at least be better) without understanding the foundations of drawing or studying the masters of that specific style.

There is a huge HUGE difference between studying and copying others. Copying takes no thought, while studying you are actively looking at the drawings by asking questions, taking notes, and applying what you learn to your own drawing.

As always this activity/assignment will be broken up into three levels of abilities. Just because you feel like you are advanced, does not mean you can't learn or benefit from the other activities.

FUNDEMENTALS

OTHER BASICS WORTH NOTING
If you pay attention to Manga eyes you will notice that   they are usually not drawn with solid Continuous lines. The upper line is usually longer and thicker to give the illusion of lashes

Souju Eyes: Manga directed toward Younger Females, are typically larger, round and expressive.
Shounen Eyes: Manga directed toward Younger Males, are typically done with smaller pupils, angular and fierce looking

Good Guys Vs Villains- In many manga series, goodies and baddies are distinguished by the size of their eyes. The Hero, the savior, and the Wide-Eyed Idealist will all have big, open, happy, trustful eyes. On the other hand, the Antihero, Evil Overlord, and scoundrel will have narrow, shifty eyes. Might be because large eyes makes the face appear more baby-like aka innocent.

HEROS

VILLIANS

Typically, in manga, the more angular an eyeshape is, the more it speaks of a rougher character who knows what he or she wants, while round shapes instead insinuate a more pliable, open, non-confrontational personality.

Left: shapes with strongly
hanging eyelines—that is narrower on the outside, wider on the inside, or generally drooping—convey that this character has a more relaxed, "soft" personality, comparably passive, potentially gullible or easy to impress, somewhat air headed, maybe even naive.

Right: shapes with
converging or parallel eyelines—narrower on the inside, wider on the outside, or simply level—convey the opposite. This eye type suggest a "hard" personality that is awake, cynical, easy-to-slight, potentially even agressive.

When it comes to female characters, even a mere hint of visible individual eyelashes is generally supposed to be a sign that this character is using mascara, thus consciously cares about her appearance, and thus is supposed to be more realistic/adult/grown-up.

Vertical Position on face: lower->more childlike
Eye/visible face ratio: bigger eyes in comparison->more childlike
