Drawing Mouths & Noses

DRAWING NOSES

 The fact is that in the anime there are a huge variety of how to draw noses. How the nose looks depends on many factors – on the age, gender, and even the alignment of the character. Most often, the nose in anime and Manga is drawn as a simple line. Or two lines that indicate the appearance of the nostrils or the tip of the nose.

Anime nose can draw a little more complicated. To do this, you can add a slightly curved nose bridge to the simple lines from the figure drawing above. The line of the nasal bridge can be of various forms, you can see this in the drawing from the artists of Drawingforall.net below.

To make the anime nose drawing more complex, you need to add some shadows. In the anime shadows are drawn very easily. First, it is necessary to depict the outlines of the shadow itself, then, using a dense but light hatching, paint over this area of the shadow

In the figure to the right,  shows you how the noses look from many different points of view. Try to repeat them, not forgetting to apply the shadow in the same way as shown in the example from the artists of Drawingforall.net.

As you could see, it was quite easy to learn how to draw an anime nose.
  • In order to draw an anime nose in the easiest form, you can do it in the form of the simplest line or two;
  • To give a little more realism, you can depict the nose bridge;
  • To further complicate your anime nose drawing, just depict the shadows with a light hatching.
  • And most importantly – try to draw an anime nose not only separately from the whole body, but also as a part of a portrait.

DRAWING MOUTHS

Anime mouths are pretty easy to draw compared to real structured mouth illustrations so only a little bit of training is needed with impressive results.

Drawing the lips in Anime / Manga style is much less complicated than drawing realistic lips / mouths. However, it is always helpful to learn drawing real mouths first to  familiarize yourself with the realistic mouth’s foundation and Structure .
When drawing lips, always look for these parts (in the illustrated picture below). Doing this can help you later on when you are drawing Anime lips, especially when you are drawing female Anime lips.

Male adult lips are simpler. It has less curvature than female adult lips and the lower lips isn’t as well defined.

Below you will see some typical Mange/Anime mouths and lips. These lips can sometimes be applied on both young and adult characters. Here you can see how the mouth fits into the rest of the Anime / Manga face structure.

Exploring Emotions

Angry, Confused, Tired

Happy, Sad, Pleased

Flirty, Serious, Silly

ASSIGNMENT

Beginner
Go online to the google, flip through your favorite manga, or hit pause on some anime. You are to find six different styles of noses and six different styles of mouths and then replicate them. Study the drawing and find  the similarities and what makes them different. Somewhere on the page write down these notes.The idea with the notes is identify various manga style features that you can then add into your own drawings. Remember that if you just copy someone else's work without understanding what they are doing you will never be able to do it on your own.

Intermediate
Draw 6  sets  of mouths and noses. Challenge yourself by trying out different ages, genders, emotions etc. Don't just do the thing that comes easiest to you. To step up the difficulty draw your own characters or create a character that would fit the style of your favorite manga or anime. Remember that if you just copy someone else's work without understanding what they are doing you will never be able to do it on your own.
Choose to finish two in ink or color. Not just pencil sketches. Take notes somewhere on your page about what you think you did well and areas that you may want to improve on.

Advanced
Draw 6 sets of mouths and noses for the same original character.
Each set should clearly display the following emotions.
  • Angry
  • Silly
  • serious
  • Overjoyed
  • frustrated
  • defeated
Choose one to turn into a full portrait including ink or color. Not just pencil sketches.
