Drawing AIn Drawing A , students will develop their technical and composition skills by using a wide range of drawing media such as, graphite, colored pencil, charcoal, India ink, pastel and oil pastel. The emphasis of Drawing A will be drawing from observation and composition studies. Students will also keep a sketchbook or a visual/verbal journal throughout the year. Drawing A is a beginning opportunity for students to explore basic drawing techniques and applications. There is no prerequisite required for this course. Students should expect to be introduced to techniques for skill development, art history, aesthetics in drawing, critical thinking strategies and artwork planning, creating finished pieces of artwork, means for displaying artwork, and critique seminars. Students will be exposed to many drawing exercises to loosen up drawing muscles, along with activities to develop the right side of the brain. Aesthetics and the relevance of drawing to cultures will be integrated within this foundation course for Drawing B, C and Studio.

Drawing BStudents will expand the skills and creative ideas developed in Drawing A with emphasis on the creative possibilities of media (pastel, charcoal, pen and ink, colored pencil, etc). Creativity and refined quality in finished drawings will be expected. Both traditional and contemporary approaches will be discussed and applied in drawing problems that will incorporate portraiture and the human figure.

Drawing CStudents will focus on the exploration and the development of a personal style. An in-depth study, of one or more media and subject matter, will be student-directed and teacher-guided. This study will allow students to work independently and/or collaboratively with others. Individual problem-posing/solving, self-expression, applicaiton of aesthetics and critiquing will be encouraged. Students will maintain a process/product portfolio. Successful completion at this lievel will allow students to pursue drawing problems independently at the studio level.
