INTERPRETING IMAGES

DENOTATION - the literal or primary meaning of a word, in contrast to the feelings or ideas that the word suggests.
  •  what do you literally see without interpretation

CONNOTATION - an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning
  • Based off of the clues/literal things mentioned above what meanings, feelings, conclusions, and messages are being presented?
  • Why did the artist choose these specific choices?

 ​How do your personal experiences help you interpret the image?

What are some things that could be altered to enhance or change our interpretation?

SUMMATIVE ASSIGNMENT - DOUBLE EXPOSURE PORTRAIT

Who we are is a mass collection of experiences, environments, interactions, successes, failures, and so much more. In this assignment you are challenged to dig deep and into what makes you, you.

Start by completing the planning sheet that explores who you are and where you want to go.

WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR
  • a minimum of 5 clues or symbolic elements that relate to you and your narrative
  • bold blended colors consisting of layers and not colors straight from the pencil
  • use of values to create depth
  • an intentional story that is able to be communicated through the work
  • intentional use of color
  • technically clean - this means that you didn't rush through the project, there are not marks all over the paper, folds, tears, etc.

YOUR OPTIONS

OPTION ONE - SILHOUETTE WITH STORY
For this option you will create a silhouette of yourself and draw a scene representing a important scene from your past, present or future.
OPTION TWO - STORY THROUGH SILHOUETTE
For this option you will create a silhouette of an animal or an object that represents you. On the inside you will de a portrait of yourself. Consider placement and composition of yourself within the object.
OPTION THREE - HYBRID OF OPTION ONE AND TWO
​For option three you will be creating  a drawing that consists of half of your face and half of something else (location, animal, object, etc). The two halves should seamlessly  blend together to create one surrealistic image.
